Austin's reputation is live music, and the reputation is accurate, but the geography behind it is not what visitors expect. There is no single music district. There are three, they are a mile apart, and they do different things.
Sixth Street is the historic strip: cover bands, students, and a crowd that skews young and loud from Thursday to Saturday. Rainey Street is a run of converted bungalows turned into bars, quieter and more recent. South Congress, across the river, is shops and restaurants with music in a handful of rooms rather than every doorway.
And running underneath all of it is Lady Bird Lake, with a ten-mile trail around it, which is the thing Austin residents actually use and most visitors never touch.
Why the position between them matters
The walkable core is small: from Rainey Street to the Capitol is fifteen minutes, and the lake trail starts at the bottom of it. Stay inside that zone and the music, the food and the water are all on foot.
Stay north of the university or out toward the Domain and you are driving, in a city where the traffic on the north-south corridor is genuinely poor.
The one thing worth knowing before you book: Austin's rates are event-driven to an extreme degree. South by Southwest in March, Austin City Limits across two October weekends and the Formula One race weekend take the same room to three or four times its ordinary price. Check the calendar before you fix dates.

Downtown and the lake
Between Congress Avenue and the water, closest to the trail and to Rainey Street.

The hotels along the Domain and the north corridor are excluded. They are newer, cheaper, have parking and sit beside the tech campuses, and they are twenty-five minutes from the lake in traffic that gets worse every year.
What to do
Walk or cycle the Ann and Roy Butler trail around Lady Bird Lake. Ten miles, flat, with a boardwalk section over the water, and it is the best thing in the city.
See music on a weeknight rather than a weekend. The Continental Club on South Congress, the Saxon Pub and the Broken Spoke for two-step dancing are where the playing is, rather than the cover bands on Sixth.
Eat barbecue and accept the queue, or go to a place outside town where there isn't one. Then eat tacos for breakfast, which is the correct Austin meal.
Swim at Barton Springs, a spring-fed pool that holds around 20 degrees year round, and watch the bats leave from under the Congress Avenue bridge at dusk between March and October.
Practical notes
Austin-Bergstrom is 20 minutes from downtown.
March to May and October to November are the good months. Summer regularly exceeds 38 degrees. Winter is mild.
Check the event calendar before booking: South by Southwest, Austin City Limits and the Formula One weekend each take rates to multiples of normal and require booking many months ahead.

Sixth Street or Rainey Street?
Rainey for bars and a calmer crowd, Sixth for the historic strip and the noise. South Congress for neither, which is why many people prefer it.
Do you need a car?
Not if you stay downtown or on South Congress. Anywhere else, yes.
When are the bats there?
Roughly March to October, leaving at dusk from the Congress Avenue bridge. It takes twenty minutes and costs nothing.
How many nights?
Three. Two for the city and a third for the Hill Country or a swimming hole.
