15 Dubai Hotels Split Between the Sand Side and the Skyline Side

Dubai runs about forty kilometres along the coast and its two centres of gravity are at opposite ends of it. Downtown, around the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall, is the skyline: towers, the fountain, the shopping, and the financial district beside it. The beach strip, running from Jumeirah out along the Palm and down to Marina, is the other: sand, resorts, and water warm enough to swim in for most of the year.

In light traffic they are twenty-five minutes apart. At six in the evening on a weekday, closer to an hour on Sheikh Zayed Road. Choosing between them is the single decision that shapes a Dubai trip, and most visitors make it by brand rather than by geography.

Which one you actually want

The beach if this is a holiday. The sea is the thing Dubai has that its rivals do not: a long stretch of soft sand facing northwest into the Gulf, warm from October through May, with sunsets straight down the water. The resorts along it are among the best in the world and the pace is slower.

Downtown if this is a short stop, a business trip, or a first visit weighted toward the buildings. You get the Burj Khalifa, the fountain, the malls and the old creek quarters within reach, and no beach at all.

There is a third option that almost nobody considers, which is the creek in old Dubai, where the city started and where the souks and the abra crossings still are.

The Jumeirah beach strip

The original beach, closest to the city, with the best sand and the shortest run downtown.

Jumeirah Burj Al Arab Dubai is the sail-shaped hotel on its own island that defined the city's image, all-suite, with a level of theatre that is either the point or the problem. It is worth one night as an experience.

Jumeirah Al Qasr Dubai sits in a resort complex built as a Venetian-style network of waterways with abras running between the buildings, a private beach and the best souk-styled dining strip in the city. It is the most complete family resort in Dubai.

One&Only Royal Mirage occupies a beachfront site with Moorish architecture, mature gardens and the calmest atmosphere on the strip. It is the grown-up choice on this coast.

Bvlgari Resort Dubai sits on Jumeirah Bay island, a seahorse-shaped development off the coast, with a yacht club, a private beach and the most refined design in the emirate.

Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach occupies a beachfront position with two pools, a very good spa and the shortest transfer downtown of any beach hotel here.

The Palm Jumeirah

The artificial island. Longer transfers, bigger resorts, and the crescent has the best swimming water in Dubai.

Atlantis The Royal sits on the crescent with an aquarium, a waterpark, a sky pool and eleven restaurants, and it is the most maximal hotel in a city that specialises in maximal. Book it knowing what it is.

One&Only The Palm Dubai occupies a beachfront estate on the trunk with Moorish architecture, mature gardens and a quiet stretch of sand. It is the calmest address on the Palm.

Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah sits on the west crescent with a long private beach, a large spa and a straightforward luxury operation. It faces the sunset directly.

FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai occupies a position with the highest infinity pool on the island and a beach club, and it is the most sociable of the Palm hotels.

Downtown and DIFC

The skyline half. No beach, and everything else.

Armani Hotel Dubai, Burj Khalifa occupies the lower floors of the Burj Khalifa itself, designed throughout by the fashion house whose name is on it, with the fountain outside the window. It is the only hotel inside the building.

Address Downtown sits on the fountain lake with rooms looking directly at the Burj Khalifa and a rooftop pool with the same view. It is the best value downtown for the sightline.

Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre occupies a tower in the financial district with the largest rooms downtown, two pools and the most reliable service in the city.

Jumeirah Emirates Towers Dubai sits in the twin towers on Sheikh Zayed Road, the original landmark of modern Dubai, with a business-focused operation and a good position between downtown and the beach.

The creek and old Dubai

Park Hyatt Dubai occupies a low Moorish-style property on the creek with a golf course, a marina and gardens, in the part of the city that existed before the towers. The souks and the abra crossings are minutes away.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel Dubai sits on the beach at Jumeirah with an all-suite layout and direct beach access, at rates below the resorts around it.

What we have left off

The Dubai Marina and JBR towers are excluded, and they hold a great many comfortable rooms at good prices with a beach at the end of the street. The beach there is narrow, busy and hemmed in by high-rise, which is a different product from the resort strip described above.

What to do

Go up the Burj Khalifa at sunset with a pre-booked ticket, or skip it and go to a bar on the 50th floor of something nearby for a fraction of the price and a view that includes the Burj.

Do old Dubai properly: the gold and spice souks in Deira, an abra across the creek for one dirham, and the Al Fahidi historic quarter with its wind towers. It takes a morning and it is the part most visitors skip entirely.

Get into the desert. An overnight in a desert camp or a dawn balloon flight is the thing people remember, and the reserves an hour inland are genuinely quiet.

Eat outside the hotels. The Pakistani, Iranian and Lebanese restaurants in Deira and Karama are the real food culture of the city.

Practical notes

DXB sits between downtown and the creek, 15 minutes from Downtown and 30 to 45 from the Palm. Al Maktoum is far to the south.

November to March is the season: warm, dry and perfect. April, May and October are hot but manageable. June to September regularly exceeds 45 degrees and the city moves indoors entirely, which is when rates halve.

Ramadan changes eating hours and licensing. The metro is good along one axis and useless off it; taxis are cheap and plentiful.

Beach or Downtown?

Beach for a holiday, Downtown for a short stop. They are twenty-five minutes apart without traffic and an hour with it.

Is the Palm worth the transfer?

For the swimming water and the resort scale, yes. For a first visit weighted toward the city, no.

Is summer really impossible?

Above 45 degrees, outdoor life stops. If you will stay indoors and use a chilled pool, the rates are extraordinary.

How many nights?

Four. Three on the beach and one for old Dubai and the desert.
