12 Punta Cana Resorts on the Stretches Sargassum Tends to Miss

Sargassum is a floating brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic in vast rafts and lands on windward Caribbean shores. Since around 2011 the quantities reaching the region have been far larger than historic norms, and the eastern Dominican Republic sits directly in its path.

When it lands it piles up on the sand, it smells strongly as it decomposes, and the resorts clear it with tractors at dawn. When it does not, the beach is white sand and turquoise water and nobody mentions it.

What actually determines whether it reaches you

Three things, and none of them appear in a brochure.

Season. Arrivals are heaviest broadly from spring into late summer, with the worst usually falling between about April and August. December to March, which is also the dry season and peak, is generally the clearest window.

Orientation. The long Bávaro and Arena Gorda beaches face east and northeast into the open Atlantic, which is the direction the sargassum comes from. The Cap Cana shoreline to the south, and Juanillo beach in particular, sits in a bay with a headland to the northeast, and it is noticeably less affected.

The year. Volumes vary considerably from one year to the next and no stretch is immune. Any resort claiming to be sargassum-free is overselling.

The honest advice is to weight the odds: book the sheltered side, travel in the drier months, and choose a resort with a serious pool complex so that a bad week on the sand is not a bad week.

The southern, more sheltered shoreline. A marina, a golf course and the calmest water in the area.

The Westin Puntacana Resort sits within the same estate with a larger operation, several restaurants and a golf course along the sea.

Bávaro and Uvero Alto

The long eastern beaches. The best sand in the area on a clear week and the most exposed to arrivals.

What we have left off

The very large all-inclusive complexes at the northern end of Bávaro are excluded, and they are the best value in the Caribbean by a considerable distance. They are also on the most exposed stretch of the most exposed coast, at a scale where the beach experience is the product.

What to do

Take a catamaran to Saona or Catalina island, off the southern coast, where the water is shallow and clear and the sargassum does not reach.

Go to the Hoyo Azul cenote at Scape Park, and to the ecological reserve at Puntacana, which has twelve freshwater lagoons in the forest.

Go inland. The Dominican Republic is a mountainous country with a real interior, and Higüey, Samaná and the Los Haitises national park are all reachable.

Learn to swim in the Atlantic properly here: the eastern beaches have surf and a shore break, and the flags matter.

Eat outside the resort at least once. Bávaro's local restaurants and the fish shacks along the coast are a fraction of the price and better.

Practical notes

Punta Cana airport is 10 to 30 minutes from the resorts and is the busiest in the country, with direct flights from across North America and Europe.

December to April is the dry season, the peak and the clearest window for sargassum. May to August carries the highest risk. September and October are hurricane season with the lowest rates of the year.

Almost everything here is all-inclusive. Compare on food quality and pool complex rather than nightly rate, and check the resort's sargassum management policy directly.
