The Cancun hotel zone is shaped like a number seven. A short leg runs west to east along the top, and a long leg runs north to south down the side. Almost nobody books with that shape in mind, and it determines what the water in front of your resort does.

The short northern leg faces Bahia de Mujeres, a sheltered bay behind Isla Mujeres. The water there is shallow, flat and turquoise, with barely any wave action at all. The long eastern leg faces the open Caribbean. It is more dramatic, the sand is finer and whiter, and it has surf, a steeper shelf and a rip current that closes the beach under a red flag on a regular basis.

Why the orientation decides who should book where

If you are travelling with small children, or you want to float rather than be knocked over, or you want to swim rather than jump waves, the northern leg is the correct answer and it is not close. Kilometres 1 to 9 give you water you can stand up in a long way out, with no undertow.

If you want the postcard beach and you are a confident swimmer, the eastern leg is more beautiful and the sand is better. But the flag system there is real and worth respecting; the Caribbean side of Cancun produces drownings every year, most of them among visitors who ignored a red flag.

The ten below are all on the calm side. They are grouped by position along it.

The bay, kilometres 1 to 9

Facing Bahia de Mujeres. Shallow, flat, safe, and the water is at its most photogenic here.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun - All Inclusive sits on the bay with the widest calm-water beach in the zone and the largest pool complex on the northern leg. It also has genuinely good restaurants, which is unusual in Cancun. It is the most complete resort on this side.

What we have left off

The finest hotels in the hotel zone are excluded, and most of them sit on the eastern leg. They have better sand, better rooms and better service than several properties on this list, and their water has a rip.

What to do besides the beach

Go to Isla Mujeres for a day by ferry from Puerto Juarez, rent a golf cart and drive the island, and swim at Playa Norte, which is better than any beach in Cancun.

Do one Mayan site properly. Tulum is closer and set on a cliff; Chichen Itza is more impressive and further, and both are much better before nine in the morning. Coba lets you climb and has fewer people.

Swim in a cenote. Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote near Tulum are the accessible ones. Ik Kil near Chichen Itza is beautiful and busy.

Eat outside the hotel zone. Downtown Cancun, along Avenida Yaxchilan and around Parque de las Palapas, has the actual food at a fraction of the resort price.

Practical notes

Cancun airport is 20 to 30 minutes from the hotel zone. Pre-book a transfer; the arrivals hall timeshare operation is aggressive.

December to April is high season, dry and perfect. May and June are hot with good value. July to October is hurricane season, and sargassum seaweed is a real issue on the eastern leg in those months, considerably less so on the sheltered northern bay, which is another argument for the calm side.

Tap water is not for drinking. Tipping follows US convention.

Questions people actually ask

Which side has better sand?

The eastern leg, clearly. Finer and whiter. The northern bay has calmer water and better swimming. You are choosing between them.

Is sargassum a problem?

Seasonally, mostly summer, and mostly on the Caribbean-facing side. The sheltered bay is much less affected.

Is Cancun worth it over Playa del Carmen or Tulum?

Cancun for the calm water, the resorts and the airport proximity. Playa for walkable restaurants. Tulum for the setting, at a price and with worse logistics than its reputation suggests.

How many nights?

Six. Five on the beach and one day inland for a site and a cenote.
