8 Fiji Resorts You Reach Without a Second Flight After Nadi

A remote island means a flight, then a flight, then a boat. For a week, that is a large share of the holiday spent in transit.

Fiji has 330 islands and the brochure photographs are mostly of the far ones. What the brochure does not explain is what reaching them costs in time. A resort on a remote island typically means an international flight into Nadi, then a domestic flight or a seaplane, then a boat, and the connections do not always run on the day you arrive. It is entirely normal to lose most of a day at each end, and to spend a four-figure sum per couple on transfers alone.

For a two-week trip that is a reasonable trade. For a week, and particularly for a first visit or a trip with children, it is a large share of the holiday spent in transit.

Why the single-transfer resorts deserve more attention than they get

The western side of Viti Levu, the main island, is where the airport is, and a run of resorts sits within an hour or two of it by road or a short boat. They are unfairly treated as the compromise option. In practice they get you into the water on the day you land, they let you leave on a morning flight without an overnight, and several are genuinely excellent.

They also give you something the outer islands cannot: you can drive somewhere. The Coral Coast, the Sabeto hot springs, the Nadi markets and the Sigatoka dunes are all reachable, which matters when a week on a small island starts to feel small.

The eight below are all reachable from Nadi by road, or by one short boat, with no domestic flight. They are grouped by how far along the coast.

Denarau Island, twenty minutes from the airport

A causeway-linked resort peninsula with a marina, golf and most of the big-brand properties. The beach is unspectacular and the convenience is unmatched.

Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is the most complete family resort on Denarau, with a large lagoon pool complex, a good kids' club and the most reliable service on the island.

Momi Bay and Natadola, forty to ninety minutes by road

South of the airport along the Coral Coast road, with better beaches and more space.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay sits at Momi Bay with the only overwater bures on the main island, which means you get the photograph without the flight. It is 45 minutes by road from the airport.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort sits on the Coral Coast with a strong family operation, a good reef offshore and the most reliable value on this list.

What we have left off

The Mamanuca and Yasawa island resorts are excluded and they are the most beautiful properties in Fiji. Each one needs a second flight or a long boat, which is the entire premise of this article.

What to do when you can drive

Go to the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs, which is silly and enjoyable and takes a morning. The Garden of the Sleeping Giant nearby is an orchid collection in the foothills.

Take a boat out to the Mamanuca islands for the day rather than staying on one. Most operators run from Port Denarau, the snorkelling is excellent, and you are back by five.

For the Coral Coast, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes are a genuine archaeological site and the river safari upstream is the best way to see village Fiji properly rather than as a floor show.

Diving at Beqa Lagoon out of Pacific Harbour includes one of the best shark dives in the world, in the right conditions, for qualified divers.

Practical notes

Nadi is the international gateway and most long-haul flights land early in the morning, which is an argument on its own for a resort you can reach by road: you are in the water by ten rather than waiting for a connection.

May to October is the dry season, cooler and less humid, and the best window. November to April is the wet season and includes cyclone risk from December to March. Fiji is warm year round.

Tipping is not traditional. Rental cars are straightforward on the main island. Sundays are quiet.

Questions people actually ask

Are the outer islands worth the transfers?

For ten days or more, yes, and they are exceptional. For a week, the transfer time and cost take a serious bite out of the trip.

Is Denarau a real Fiji experience?

No, and it does not pretend to be. It is a well-run resort peninsula twenty minutes from the airport. Pair it with day trips or drive down the coast.

Which is the best beach on the main island?

Natadola, clearly, and it is about an hour from Nadi.

How many nights?

Seven on the main island. Ten if you are adding an outer island for the second half, which is the ideal shape for a Fiji trip.
