Highway One along the Big Sur coast is cut into a cliff face that is actively falling into the sea. Landslides close it regularly, sometimes for months and occasionally for more than a year, and when a section goes there is no detour: the alternative is a long inland route through the Salinas valley that adds hours.
This is not a theoretical risk. Major closures have shut the road repeatedly over the past decade, and the section south of Big Sur village is the most exposed.
Why the closure map is the booking question
The coast splits into three parts and their vulnerability differs.
Carmel and Monterey, at the northern end, are reached from Highway 1 north of the slide zone and effectively never cut off. They are the safe base.
Big Sur proper, the thirty kilometres from Bixby Bridge south past Pfeiffer, is where the great cliff hotels sit and where the road is most likely to close.
Carmel Valley, fifteen minutes inland, is warm, sunny when the coast is fogged in, and connected to nothing that closes.
The practical position: if you want the Big Sur cliff experience, book it and check the road status close to travel. If you want the coast without the risk, base yourself at Carmel or Pebble Beach and drive down for the day.
The other variable is fog. The coast is grey and cool through much of June and July, and Carmel Valley fifteen minutes inland is frequently twelve degrees warmer in full sun.

Big Sur, on the cliff

The motels along Highway 1 in Big Sur village are excluded. Several are genuinely pleasant and they are the only affordable way to sleep on that stretch. They are three-star roadside accommodation, which is the standard this list does not go below.
What to do
Drive the coast on a clear morning, early, and stop at Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach for the purple sand and the rock arch, and McWay Falls, which drops onto a beach you cannot reach.
Check the road. Caltrans publishes closure status and it changes; do not assume a route that was open last month is open this week.
In Carmel, walk the village, the Carmel Mission and Scenic Road above the beach. Drive the 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach.
Monterey has the aquarium, which is one of the best in the world and worth a morning.
Point Lobos, just south of Carmel, is a small state reserve with sea otters, seals and the best short coastal walks in California.
Practical notes
Monterey has a small regional airport; San Jose is 90 minutes and San Francisco just over two hours.
September and October are the clearest months. June and July bring persistent coastal fog. Winter is green, dramatic and the highest risk period for road closures.
Fill the tank before Big Sur. There are very few services on that stretch and prices reflect it. Mobile signal is patchy to non-existent.
