Almost all Galápagos marketing is about cruises. A live-aboard boat of sixteen to a hundred passengers sails overnight between islands, which is how you reach the outer sites — Genovesa, Fernandina, Española — and how you see the greatest number of species in the shortest time.
The alternative is staying on land. Four of the islands are inhabited, three have hotels worth booking, and you take day boats out to the visitor sites and come back each evening.
What each one actually gets you
A cruise covers more ground, reaches the remote islands and never wastes a morning in transit. It also means a cabin, a fixed itinerary, the same twenty people for a week and, for some travellers, seasickness on the crossings between islands. The good boats book six months to a year ahead.
A land-based trip costs less, gives you a proper room, lets you choose each day and lets you leave. It reaches the central islands well — Santa Cruz, North Seymour, Bartolomé, Isabela, Floreana, San Cristóbal — and it does not reach the far northern or western sites at all.
The honest position: if you want the fullest wildlife itinerary and you are comfortable on a boat, cruise. If you would rather sleep on land, have a shower that works and pick your own days, the land-based trip covers a great deal and this is the article for it.
Every visitor site requires a licensed naturalist guide, whichever way you do it. That is national park law rather than an upsell.

Santa Cruz
The main island. Puerto Ayora is the largest town in the archipelago and the base for most day boats.

San Cristóbal
The eastern island, with the second airport and sea lions on the town beach.

The live-aboard boats are excluded, and for many visitors they are the better way to see the Galápagos. They are vessels rather than hotels, and this guide covers rooms on land.
The small hostels across Puerto Ayora are also excluded on the standard.
What to do
Book the day boats before you arrive. The good ones to North Seymour, Bartolomé and Santa Fe fill, and the number of daily visitors to each site is capped.
Snorkel as much as you can. The wildlife encounters in the water — sea lions, penguins, turtles, rays, sharks — are better than anything on land, and the animals are indifferent to people because they evolved without predators.
Go to the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora, then to the highlands to see giant tortoises in the wild rather than in pens.
Walk to Tortuga Bay from Puerto Ayora, which takes about forty-five minutes and ends at a beach with marine iguanas and no facilities.
Keep the distance rule: two metres from every animal, always, even when they walk toward you. They will.
Practical notes
Flights come from Quito and Guayaquil to Baltra, for Santa Cruz, or San Cristóbal. There is a national park entry fee and a transit control card, both payable on arrival, and the park fee was increased recently, so check the current amount.
The islands sit on the equator with two seasons: December to May is warmer, wetter and calmer with better water clarity, and June to November is cooler and rougher with more nutrient-rich water and more marine activity. There is no bad time.
