José Ignacio is a fishing village of a few hundred permanent residents on a headland with a lighthouse. For about six weeks it is one of the most expensive places in South America, and for the other forty-six it is largely shut.
The season here is narrower than almost any destination in this guide. Uruguay's summer runs December to February, the Argentine and Brazilian holidays concentrate into January, and that month is when José Ignacio has the restaurants, the beach clubs and the rates. By late March much of it closes. In June there is a petrol station and a grocer.
That is worth knowing before you book, because photographs of the place are almost all taken in January.
The coast, west to east
Punta del Este, the main resort, is a peninsula of high-rise apartment towers and a marina — the Miami of the Río de la Plata, built for Argentine holidaymakers from the 1950s onward. It has the casinos, the nightlife and the infrastructure.
La Barra, ten minutes east over a famously undulating wave-shaped bridge, is younger and looser.
Manantiales and Punta Piedras, further east, are quieter with good beaches.
José Ignacio, forty minutes from Punta del Este, is the low-rise end: no high buildings, sand streets in places, and the highest concentration of good restaurants on the coast.
The interior, inland, is estancia country — cattle, vineyards around Garzón, and a landscape of low hills that almost no visitor sees.
The Atlantic here is cold, the surf is real, and the beaches face two directions: the mansa side, calm and river-facing, and the brava side, rough and ocean-facing.

The house rentals across José Ignacio and Manantiales are excluded, and in January they are how the great majority of the summer population stays. They are houses rather than hotels.
What to do
Eat at the beach parrillas. The coast's cooking is wood fire and seafood, and one restaurant at José Ignacio cooking entirely over open flame in the dunes has been widely imitated worldwide.
Go inland to Garzón, a near-abandoned village with a serious restaurant and vineyards around it, and to the wineries on the ridge.
See Casapueblo at Punta Ballena, the white cliff-side building the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró built and extended by hand over decades, with a sunset ceremony every evening.
Swim on both sides. The mansa for calm water, the brava for surf and the wind.
Ride. The estancias inland run horses and it is the way to see a landscape that is otherwise invisible from the coast road.
Practical notes
Punta del Este has its own airport with regional flights; Montevideo is ninety minutes by road and has the international connections. Buenos Aires is a short flight or a ferry and a drive.
January is the season and it is intense. December and February are quieter and still open. March is the local's month, warm and emptying. From April to November most of José Ignacio is closed and Punta del Este runs at low capacity.
The water is cold. The Atlantic here does not warm up much even in January.
