The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is a neo-Gothic parish church with pink sandstone spires that do not belong in central Mexico at all. The story is that a self-taught local stonemason, Zeferino Gutiérrez, redesigned the facade in the 1880s from postcards of European cathedrals, working out the geometry with his workers by scratching plans in the sand.
Whether or not the detail is exact, the building is genuinely singular, and it dominates San Miguel from almost every angle. It is also the reason the town's rooftop culture exists: the spires are the view, and every hotel and restaurant that can has put a terrace where you can see them.
Which rooftops actually see it
The town sits on a hillside and the church is at the bottom of it, on the Jardín, the main square.
That means the rooftops with the view are the ones above the Jardín, on the slope. A terrace at the same level or below sees walls. This is worth asking about specifically, because "rooftop terrace" is standard here and "rooftop terrace with the Parroquia" is not.
The centro histórico is a UNESCO site, compact and steep, with cobbled streets that are genuinely difficult in the wrong shoes. Everything worth doing is within about ten blocks.
Colonia Guadalupe, north of the centre, is the mural district. Atascadero, on the hill east, is residential with the best views. The countryside around the town has hot springs at Escondido Place and La Gruta, and vineyards to the north.

What we have left off
The casa rentals across the centro are excluded, and San Miguel has a very large market in them serving the substantial American and Canadian expatriate population and long-stay visitors. They are houses rather than hotels.
What to do
Be on a rooftop at sunset. That is the town's daily ritual and the light on the pink stone is the whole point.
Walk the Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile mill converted into galleries and studios, which is where the art scene actually is.
Go to the Sunday market at the Tianguis, and to the Mercado de Artesanías for the tin, textiles and silver.
Bathe in the hot springs north of town, which are natural mineral pools in the countryside and cost very little.
Take a day to Guanajuato, an hour and a half west, which is a mining city built into a ravine with tunnels under it and a completely different feel.
Practical notes
Querétaro airport is an hour away with domestic and some US connections; León is an hour and a half; Mexico City is about three and a half hours by road.
The climate is mild year round at 1,900 metres, with cool evenings. October to May is dry. The rains come as afternoon storms from June to September. Day of the Dead and the September independence celebrations both fill the town.
The cobbles are uneven and steep. Bring proper shoes and be realistic about mobility.

Is it very American?
There is a large long-standing expatriate community and English is widely spoken in the centro. Opinions on this vary; the town is not less Mexican for it.
