Verbier's terrain is not the reason most people struggle with the resort. The reason is that almost everything starts at one place.
The Médran lift station is the main way onto the mountain from the village. In peak weeks a queue forms there before the lifts open, and if you are staying at the far end of Verbier you are walking uphill in ski boots to join it. The village is built on a shelf at 1,500 metres and it is steeper than it looks on a map.
Being within a couple of minutes of Médran is worth more here than at most resorts, and it is the thing to check before booking.
The mountain
Verbier sits at the top of the Four Valleys, around 400 kilometres of linked piste across Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon, reaching 3,330 metres at Mont Fort.
What it is actually known for is off-piste. The Bec des Rosses above the resort hosts the final of the Freeride World Tour, on a face so steep that watching it from the village is uncomfortable. The lift-served backcountry here is among the most serious in the Alps, the Vallée Blanche it is not, and people die on it most seasons.
If you are going for that terrain, take a guide. If you are not, Verbier's marked pistes are good rather than exceptional, and the resort is at least as well known for its nightlife.
The village
Médran is the lift base and the centre of gravity.
The Place Centrale, a few minutes down, is the village square with the bars and restaurants.
Savoleyres, at the northwestern end, is the second lift and a quieter side of the village.
Le Hameau and the upper chalets are the residential streets above, which are quiet, expensive and involve a shuttle.
Verbier is also a substantial summer destination for mountain biking, with lift-served trails and the Patrouille des Glaciers ski-mountaineering race in even years.

The catered chalets are excluded, and in Verbier they are the dominant accommodation, particularly for British visitors and for groups. They are houses rather than hotels.
What to do
Take a guide for anything off-piste. The terrain here is serious, the avalanche risk is real and the guiding is excellent.
Ski the Four Valleys properly, which takes a full day to cross and back and is best done with someone who knows the connections.
Watch the Xtreme Verbier on the Bec des Rosses in spring if the dates align. It is the most extreme event in competitive skiing and the village watches from the valley floor.
Eat on the mountain at the Cabane du Mont Fort, which is a proper mountain hut, and drink in the village afterwards, which Verbier does at scale.
In summer, ride the lift-served bike trails or walk the high paths toward the Grand Combin.
Practical notes
Geneva is about two hours by road. The train reaches Le Châble in the valley and a cable car or bus climbs to the village.
The season runs early December to late April. Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the peaks. Verbier is at 1,500 metres, which is high enough to be reliable but the village-level snow at either end of the season can be thin.
The village is steep and spread out. Check the walk to Médran before booking.
