Almost nothing inside Yellowstone or Grand Teton clears four stars, and that is not an oversight. Lodging inside a US national park is run by concessionaires on federal contracts, the buildings are mostly historic, and the terms of those contracts constrain what can be charged, altered or added. Old Faithful Inn, built in 1904 and the largest log structure in the world, is a genuinely remarkable building with a seven-storey lobby and a stone fireplace of five hundred tonnes. It is also a three-star hotel with some rooms that share bathrooms down the hall.
Three properties in and immediately around the two parks clear the bar this guide applies. That is the list. Everything else in the parks is a concession lodge, a cabin or a campground, and if that is what you want — and there are good arguments for it — you should book it knowing what it is.
The booking window is the real problem
In-park rooms are released roughly thirteen months ahead and the good dates go within minutes. If you want to sleep inside the boundary in July, you are setting a calendar reminder for the previous June.
That window matters more here than the hotel choice, because the parks are enormous. Yellowstone is 8,991 square kilometres with roads that form a figure of eight; driving from the north entrance to Old Faithful takes over two hours. Staying outside the gates adds an hour or more to each end of every day, and the wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk — precisely when you would be commuting.
The two parks
Yellowstone sits on a caldera and holds around half the world's geysers, a canyon, and the Lamar Valley where wolves were reintroduced in 1995 and can be watched from the road at first light.
Grand Teton, immediately south, has no foothills — the range rises about two thousand metres straight off the valley floor, which is why it looks the way it does. It is the more beautiful of the two and the less visited.
Paradise Valley, north of the Yellowstone boundary in Montana, runs along the Yellowstone River between two ranges and is where the gateway options are.

Jenny Lake Lodge occupies a cluster of cabins near Jenny Lake dating to the 1920s, originally a dude ranch, with the Tetons directly above and a rate that includes breakfast, dinner, horseback riding and bicycles. Every other in-park option: Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Canyon Lodge, Signal Mountain and the rest. Several are historic and one is among the great American buildings. They are three-star concession lodges and they are also, for a lot of visitors, the right answer.
What to do
Book thirteen months out if you want to be inside the boundary in summer.
Be in the Lamar Valley at first light with binoculars. Wolves, bison, bears and pronghorn, and the people already parked along the road with spotting scopes will usually tell you what they have found.
See the geyser basins beyond Old Faithful. Grand Prismatic from the overlook trail rather than the boardwalk, Norris for the most volatile, and the Upper Basin at dusk when the crowds thin.
Drive or paddle in Grand Teton. Jenny Lake has a boat shuttle to the Cascade Canyon trailhead, and the Snake River float trips run at dawn.
Go in September. The crowds drop sharply after Labor Day, the elk rut begins, and the light is better.
Practical notes
Bozeman and Jackson both have airports; Bozeman is ninety minutes from the north entrance and Jackson is at the Teton gate. West Yellowstone and Cody are the other gateways.
The parks are seasonal. Most roads close to cars from roughly November to April, when the interior is reachable only by snowcoach or snowmobile — which is a genuinely extraordinary way to see it and almost nobody does.
Distances are large and fuel stops are few. Fill up at the gateways.
