Worth knowing: One of the worst and most unprofessional hotel experiences I have ever had Certainly not what I expected from a 5 star InterContinental. I travel extremely frequently and unfortunately spend a significant part of the year staying in hotels. I therefore do not write something like this lightly. My experience at InterContinental Malta was unacceptable from beginning to end. The room had a very strong smell of mould, strong enough that my throat was burning while I was inside. I reported it to reception on the first day and was assured that it would be dealt with immediately. Nothing changed. I complained a second time and was again told that housekeeping would be informed and the problem would be resolved. When I returned, instead of the underlying issue being addressed, the room appeared to have simply been sprayed with fragrance to mask the smell. The mould smell was still there. On my final evening, after two days of this, I informed reception again and told them that I had decided to leave the hotel early. Only then was I told that they could change my room. That left me with a very obvious question: if changing rooms was possible, why was I left for two days in a room smelling of mould after complaining twice? A five-star hotel should not be putting guests in a room with a strong mould smell in the first place. And if such a problem somehow occurs, the immediate response should be to properly investigate it and move the guest ,not leave them there for two days and attempt to cover the smell with fragrance. When I returned that night, the room still smelled strongly of mould. I packed my belongings and checked out early. Even then, nobody at checkout asked me why I was leaving before the end of my reservation. Unfortunately, the problems did not stop with the room. At check-in, although I had already paid for my stay online through Booking.com, I was initially told that the accommodation had not been paid for and there was an attempt to charge me again.
