America's closest ally in Asia has welcomed presidents to some of the world's most refined hotels. Recent visits, each recorded in White House schedules, have spread across three Tokyo landmarks and one hotel in Hiroshima.

The Okura Tokyo

Close to the U.S. Embassy in Toranomon, the Okura has long been part of Tokyo's diplomatic life. Barack Obama stayed at the original Hotel Okura in November 2009, meeting embassy staff there before lunch with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. President Joe Biden made it his base in May 2022, during his first presidential trip to Asia. In October 2025, President Donald Trump checked in after meeting Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace on his arrival in Tokyo.

The Okura is admired for its refined mid-century Japanese design. When the hotel was rebuilt and reopened in 2019, its celebrated original lobby, with hexagonal lanterns and latticed screens, was recreated in the Heritage Wing.

Palace Hotel Tokyo

Facing the moats and gardens of the Imperial Palace in Marunouchi, the Palace Hotel was Donald Trump's home during his May 2019 state visit. After a round of golf and lunch with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the president returned to the hotel and then went with the first lady to watch the final match of a sumo tournament, presenting the U.S. President's Cup to the champion, before returning to the Palace for the night. Book a room with a balcony overlooking the palace gardens.

Imperial Hotel Tokyo

Tokyo's first great Western-style hotel, the Imperial has welcomed dignitaries since 1890, and its Frank Lloyd Wright legacy lives on in the Old Imperial Bar. On November 5, 2017, during his first presidential visit to Japan, Donald Trump spent the night here after golfing with Prime Minister Abe and dining with him at a Ginza restaurant.

Hilton Hiroshima

When Japan hosted the G7 in Hiroshima in May 2023, the summit sessions took place at the Grand Prince Hotel on Hiroshima Bay, while President Biden made the Hilton Hiroshima his base, returning there each evening. It is a comfortable modern hotel within reach of the Peace Memorial Park.
