Explore HotelFlorida has always played the glamorous getaway, and three of its hotels have given Hollywood some of its most famous scenes.
Morris Lapidus's curving 1954 hotel on Collins Avenue was built to look like a set, and filmmakers took the hint almost immediately. The City of Miami Beach's own film office calls it the most notable filming location in Mid-Beach.
Goldfinger (1964). Sean Connery's Bond first sees Gert Fröbe's Auric Goldfinger at the Fontainebleau, cheating at cards by the pool, with the help of Shirley Eaton's Jill Masterson watching through binoculars from a suite upstairs. Bond seduces Jill, and for her betrayal Goldfinger has her painted gold, one of the most famous images in the series. Connery's Fontainebleau scenes were mostly filmed in England, but the hotel's exterior and pool were shot on location.
The Bellboy (1960). Jerry Lewis wrote, directed and starred in The Bellboy while performing at the hotel, filming almost entirely on the premises by day and doing his nightclub act at night.
Scarface (1983). The pool scenes in Brian De Palma's crime epic, with Al Pacino's Tony Montana, were filmed at the Fontainebleau.
The Bodyguard (1992). Whitney Houston's Rachel Marron performs in the hotel's Grand Ballroom, and numerous scenes with Kevin Costner were shot in and around the hotel. The soundtrack became the best-selling film soundtrack of all time.
The Fontainebleau also appears in Frank Sinatra's A Hole in the Head (1959), whose song "High Hopes" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song; The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis (1960), Elvis Presley's first TV appearance after leaving the army; Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988); the first season of Miami Vice (1984); Season 4 of The Sopranos (2002); and Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2019).
The Biltmore, a 1926 Mediterranean Revival tower modelled on Seville's Giralda and a National Historic Landmark, was one of the many Miami locations in Michael Bay's first film, Bad Boys, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Its pool was once the largest hotel pool in the United States.
Little Palm Island, a four-acre island three miles off the Florida Keys, is reached only by boat or seaplane and is often described as the only private-island resort in the United States. In 1962, Warner Bros. used it to stand in for the South Pacific in PT 109, the story of John F. Kennedy's wartime heroism, with Cliff Robertson playing Kennedy, a choice approved by the President himself. Before the crew arrived, the island had no electricity, running water or telephones.
Harry Truman used the island as a fishing retreat in the 1940s. The resort was rebuilt after Hurricane Irma in 2017 and has 30 thatched bungalow suites, with no televisions or phones in the rooms.
