Estoril

Check availabilityDuring the Second World War, neutral Portugal was a crossroads for refugees, exiles and spies, and the Palácio Estoril on the coast west of Lisbon was where many of them stayed. British and German intelligence officers worked the same bars. Ian Fleming, then a naval intelligence officer, passed through Estoril in 1941, and the town's casino is often credited with helping to inspire Casino Royale.
The connection came full circle in George Lazenby's only Bond film. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Bond stays at the Palácio, which plays itself, and meets Diana Rigg's Countess Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo, the woman he will marry by the end of the film, at the hotel and the casino next door. It's the only Bond film in which 007 gets married, and it's now often ranked among the best of the series.
