8 Banff and Lake Louise Hotels With a Lake Actually in View

Banff and Lake Louise sit inside a national park, and that single fact governs everything about staying there. Banff National Park has a legislated commercial development cap: the town of Banff cannot grow beyond a fixed boundary, there is a limit on commercial floor space, and you must demonstrate a need to reside in order to live there permanently.

The practical consequence for a visitor is that the supply of rooms is fixed and the supply of rooms with a lake or mountain in the window is very small indeed. Nothing new is being built on those shorelines, ever.

What that means for booking

Lake Louise itself has one hotel on the shore. Moraine Lake has one lodge. Emerald Lake, over the border in Yoho, has one. That is the entire inventory of lakefront accommodation in the Canadian Rockies' most famous corridor, and it books out a year ahead for summer.

The town of Banff, 45 minutes south, has considerably more rooms and no lake. It has the Bow river, the hot springs, the gondola and the restaurants, and it is where most people stay.

There is a second, less obvious reason to care. Parks Canada now restricts private vehicle access to Moraine Lake, and Lake Louise parking fills before dawn in summer. Staying at the lake, or in Lake Louise village, changes your access to both.

On a lake

The scarce inventory. Book a year out for July and August.

Fairmont Château Lake Louise occupies the shoreline at Lake Louise, a château hotel facing the glacier across the water, and the lakeview rooms look straight down the lake at Victoria Glacier. It is the most famous view in Canada and it is worth the substantial premium over the mountain-view rooms.

Emerald Lake Lodge sits on Emerald Lake in Yoho, over the British Columbia border, in a set of timber cabins around a lodge with no televisions and a lake you can canoe from the door. It is quieter than anything in Banff and it is forty minutes further.

Moraine Lake Lodge is the only lodge on Moraine Lake, a handful of cabins at the water's edge below the Valley of the Ten Peaks, with canoes at the door and no road access for the public. Guests reach it when nobody else can.

Lake Louise village

Five minutes below the lake, which matters for the parking and the shuttles.

Post Hotel & Spa sits in the village in a long-established property with an excellent restaurant, a wine cellar of real depth and rooms with fireplaces. It is the best food in the national park.

The town of Banff

Forty-five minutes south. Restaurants, the gondola, the hot springs and the Bow river.

Fairmont Banff Springs occupies a Scottish baronial castle above the Bow Falls, built by the railway in 1888, with a spa, a golf course and a scale that is startling in a national park. It is the grand hotel of the Rockies.

Rimrock Banff, Emblems Collection sits on a ridge above the town with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the valley, a large spa and the best mountain views of any hotel in Banff.

Moose Hotel and Suites occupies a building in the town centre with rooftop hot pools, a spa and the shortest walk to the restaurants.

Buffalo Mountain Lodge sits on Tunnel Mountain above the town in a set of timber lodges with a good restaurant and a quieter position than the centre.

Mount Royal Hotel occupies a central position on Banff Avenue with straightforward comfortable rooms and the best value in the town.

What we have left off

The hotels in Canmore, outside the park boundary, are excluded. They are cheaper, they have more availability and the mountains are just as good. They are also twenty minutes outside the gate, which means the park pass, the traffic and the shuttle logistics apply to you every single day.

What to do

Get to the lakes early or use the shuttles. Lake Louise parking fills before sunrise in summer and Moraine Lake is now shuttle or bus access only. Check the current Parks Canada arrangements before you arrive; they have changed repeatedly.

Walk the lakeshore at Louise and up to the Lake Agnes teahouse, which is a genuine hike to a genuine teahouse with no road access.

Drive the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper, which is among the great mountain roads of the world, and stop at Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield.

Take the Banff gondola up Sulphur Mountain and soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs afterwards.

In winter there are three ski areas on one lift pass, and the lakes freeze hard enough to skate on.

Practical notes

Calgary airport is 90 minutes to Banff and just over two hours to Lake Louise. A car is close to essential, and a national park pass is required for every vehicle.

July and August are peak with genuinely heavy crowds. June and September are excellent and quieter. Winter is cold, beautiful and cheaper, with ski season from November to May.

Wildlife is real here. Keep distance from elk and bears, carry spray on backcountry trails and follow the posted guidance.

At Lake Louise, yes. It is a small number of rooms facing a glacier and it is the reason to stay there rather than in the village.
