8 Colorado Hotels That Are Genuinely Ski-In, Not Shuttle-In

Ski-in ski-out is the most abused phrase in mountain hospitality. In its honest form it means you clip in at the door and ski to it at the end of the day. In practice it is applied to hotels a shuttle ride from a lift, hotels across a road from a beginner run, and hotels where getting to the mountain means walking three hundred metres in ski boots carrying skis, which is a specific misery that anyone who has done it will recognise.

The distinction matters more in Colorado than almost anywhere because the resorts are large, the base areas are spread out, and the difference between clipping in at the door and taking a shuttle is twenty minutes at each end of every day.

What genuinely ski-in means here

Aspen has four separate mountains. Aspen Mountain rises directly from the town, which is unusual and means a handful of hotels sit at the gondola. Snowmass, twenty minutes away, is a purpose-built village where ski-in is the norm rather than the exception. Highlands and Buttermilk have almost no lodging.

Vail is a long valley with two main base villages, Vail Village and Lionshead, both at the foot of gondolas. The hotels in those villages are genuinely at the lift; the ones further along the valley are not, regardless of the wording.

The other thing worth knowing is that a hotel at the lift in a walkable village beats a hotel technically on a piste but isolated. In Aspen and Vail the villages are the evening.

Aspen

The Little Nell sits directly at the Silver Queen gondola, which means you ski to the door and clip in at it, and it is the only hotel in Aspen where that is literally true. It is also the best hotel in the American Rockies, with a wine list of real seriousness and a bar that is the centre of the town in season.

St. Regis Aspen Resort occupies a position at the base of the mountain with a large spa, a pool and a shorter walk to the lift than anything except its famous neighbour.

Limelight Hotel Aspen sits two blocks from the gondola with a lively bar, an ice rink outside in winter and rates well below the two above. It is the best value in Aspen.

Snowmass

Twenty minutes from Aspen, purpose-built, and where ski-in is standard.

Viceroy Snowmass occupies a position on the mountain itself at Snowmass Base Village with a heated outdoor pool, a spa and genuine ski-in ski-out from the building. It is the most family-capable property on this list.

Vail Village

At the foot of the gondola in the older of Vail's two villages.

The Arrabelle at Vail Square, a RockResort, by Vail Resorts sits on Vail Square in Lionshead directly at the Eagle Bahn gondola, with an ice rink outside and a spa. It is as close to a lift as Vail gets.

Four Seasons Resort Vail occupies a position at the edge of Vail Village with a large spa, a heated pool and a ski concierge at the gondola. It is the most comfortable hotel in the valley.

Sonnenalp has been run by the same Bavarian family for decades in the middle of Vail Village, with a spa, an alpine interior that is the real thing rather than a theme, and a short walk to the lift.

Grand Hyatt Vail Resort and Spa sits at the Golden Peak base with direct access to the mountain, a pool and considerably lower rates than the village hotels.

What we have left off

The condominium complexes further down the Vail valley and along Highway 82 outside Aspen are excluded, and they are how a great many people afford a ski week in Colorado. They are apartments rather than hotels, and the shuttle at each end of the day is the trade they represent.

What to know before booking

Rates in these resorts move enormously with the calendar. Christmas and New Year, Presidents' weekend and Spring Break carry multiples of the January and early December rates for identical rooms.

Altitude is a genuine consideration. Aspen town sits at 2,400 metres and the top of Aspen Mountain is above 3,400. Take the first day slowly, drink more water than feels necessary and go easy on alcohol the first night.

Ski storage and boot fitting at the lift is what a proper ski-in hotel gives you beyond geography, and it is worth more than it sounds.

What to do besides ski

Aspen has an art museum, a serious restaurant scene and a nightlife that outlasts most European resorts. Vail Village is prettier and quieter.

Snowshoe or cross-country ski the valley floors, which is free and beautiful and the mountain towns are set up for it.

In summer, both towns are excellent hiking and cycling bases at half the winter rate, and Aspen has the Maroon Bells, which is the most photographed mountain scene in North America.

Practical notes

Aspen has its own small airport four miles from town, weather-dependent. Eagle County serves Vail. Denver is four hours by road from either and the drive over Vail Pass can close in storms.

The season runs roughly late November to mid-April. January is the coldest, quietest and cheapest; March has the best snow depth and longer days.
