9 Cairns Hotels Positioned for the Early Reef Boats

Cairns has no beach. The city fronts onto a wide tidal mudflat that empties twice a day, and the swimming is done in a saltwater lagoon the council built on the esplanade in 2003. Visitors who book Cairns expecting a beach holiday are consistently surprised, and the surprise is entirely avoidable.

What Cairns has is the departure point. The Great Barrier Reef's outer ribbon reefs are about 50 to 90 kilometres offshore, the boats leave from the Marlin Marina in the centre of town between about eight and half past eight in the morning, and they are back by half past four.

Why the marina decides the trip

A reef day is a long one, and the whole thing runs on that morning departure. Check-in is typically forty-five minutes before, which for a large catamaran means being on the pontoon by seven fifteen.

From a hotel on the esplanade or beside the marina that is a ten-minute walk. From Palm Cove, twenty-five minutes north, it is a transfer leaving before six thirty. From Port Douglas, an hour north, the boats leave from a different marina entirely and reach a different section of reef.

None of those is wrong. But the northern beach towns are where the actual beaches are, and Cairns is where the boats and the airport are, and the two are not the same place.

The three bases

Palm Cove and the northern beaches, 25 to 30 minutes up the coast, for a genuine beach, a quieter pace and a longer morning transfer.

Port Douglas, an hour north, for the best of both: a real beach, its own marina with reef boats to the northern ribbon reefs, and the Daintree rainforest at the door.

Cairns city

Walking distance to the marina and the esplanade lagoon.

Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns sits directly on the marina with rooms over the water, a pool and the shortest walk to a reef boat of any hotel in Queensland. If the reef is the point, this is the answer.

Crystalbrook Riley occupies a tower on the esplanade with a rooftop bar, a good restaurant and contemporary rooms facing the water.

Crystalbrook Bailey sits beside it under the same ownership, slightly more affordable, with a pool deck and the same esplanade position.

Reef Club Resort occupies a position on the waterfront with a large pool, several restaurants and the most complete facilities in the city.

Hilton Cairns sits on the esplanade with reliable rooms, a pool and rates below the newer properties. It is the value pick in town.

Palm Cove and the northern beaches

Twenty-five minutes north. Melaleuca trees along the sand, a handful of restaurants and a genuine beach.

Alamanda Palm Cove by Lancemore occupies a low-rise site directly on Palm Cove beach with apartment-style rooms, a pool and the best position on this stretch.

Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort & Spa sits on the same beach with a spa, several pools and a resort layout that suits families and longer stays.

Port Douglas

An hour north, with its own marina, Four Mile Beach and the Daintree beyond.

Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas occupies a large site on Four Mile Beach with saltwater lagoon pools running through the grounds, a golf course and the most complete resort in tropical Queensland.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve sits on a headland south of Port Douglas in a forest reserve, with bungalows among the trees above a private beach and no development around it. It is the quietest property on this list.

What we have left off

The backpacker hotels along Cairns esplanade are excluded, and they are the reason the city has the reputation it does among younger travellers. They are not hotels at the standard applied throughout, and the noise on that strip runs late.

What to do

Book the reef properly. The outer reef is a better experience than the inner and the smaller operators take fewer people to better sites. Ask specifically which reef you are going to and how many passengers the boat carries.

Snorkelling is enough; you do not need to dive to see it. Introductory dives are available on most boats.

Do the rainforest as well. The Daintree is the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on earth and it meets the reef at Cape Tribulation. The Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail from Cairns is the easy version.

The Atherton Tablelands, an hour inland, have waterfalls, crater lakes and a much cooler climate.

Practical notes

Cairns airport is ten minutes from the city and 25 from Palm Cove.

The dry season, May to October, is the reason to come: warm, low humidity, clear water and best reef visibility. November to April is the wet season with heat, humidity, cyclone risk and stinger season, when box jellyfish make unprotected ocean swimming unsafe and beaches use netted enclosures. Take the stinger warnings seriously and wear a suit if advised.

The reef is under real pressure from bleaching events. Choose operators with a demonstrated conservation record.
