Whitehaven Beach is seven kilometres of sand that is around 98 percent pure silica. It squeaks underfoot, it does not hold heat the way ordinary sand does, and it is fine enough that it was once considered for use in optical glass. Nobody knows for certain where it came from, since the surrounding islands are granite; the working theory is that ocean currents carried it in over millions of years.
You cannot drive to it. Whitehaven is on Whitsunday Island, which is uninhabited national park, and every visitor arrives by boat, helicopter or seaplane from Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach.
Islands, and one honest caveat
The Whitsundays are 74 islands inside the Great Barrier Reef, most of them national park, with a handful holding resorts.
An honest note about the reef itself: the Great Barrier Reef has suffered repeated mass coral bleaching events over the past decade, driven by marine heatwaves, and the condition of individual sites varies enormously. Some areas have recovered substantially and others have not. Reef trips from the Whitsundays typically run to outer sites rather than fringing reef, and operators will tell you honestly what current conditions are if you ask directly. It is worth asking.
Hamilton Island is the hub: it has the airport with direct flights from the mainland capitals, most of the resort beds, a marina, and buggies instead of cars.
Hayman Island, at the northern end, is a single resort on its own island.
Long Island and Daydream are smaller, closer to the mainland and cheaper.
Airlie Beach on the mainland is the backpacker and sailing town, with the boats and the cheapest rooms.

The bareboat and crewed sailing charters are excluded, and in the Whitsundays they are how a large share of visitors actually experience the islands, sleeping aboard between anchorages. They are vessels rather than hotels.
What to do
Get to Whitehaven, and specifically to Hill Inlet at the northern end, where the tide moves the silica sand and the water into shifting patterns. The lookout above it is the photograph everyone has seen.
Take a reef trip to an outer site, and ask the operator directly about current coral condition before booking.
Fly over Heart Reef, a natural coral formation in the shape it is named for, which is protected and can only be seen from the air.
Sail. The Whitsunday passage has reliable trade winds, sheltered water and a very large charter fleet, and a day sail is the standard way to island-hop.
Snorkel the fringing reefs off the resort islands, which are close in and often in better condition than the headline sites.
Practical notes
Hamilton Island has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Proserpine on the mainland serves Airlie Beach, 40 minutes away by road.
May to October is the dry season and the best window: cooler, less humid, reliable trade winds. November to April is the wet season with cyclone risk and stinger season, when box jellyfish make swimming outside nets or stinger suits unwise.
Stinger suits are provided by operators in season and are not optional.
