9 Cairo Hotels Where the Pyramids Are Actually in the Window

The Giza pyramids sit on a limestone plateau at the western edge of Cairo, and the city has grown until the suburb of Giza reaches the boundary wall. That proximity is the reason a handful of hotels can genuinely put a pyramid in your window, and the reason a great many more claim it.

The distinction is not subtle. A room on the plateau side of a hotel in Giza has the Great Pyramid filling the frame at a distance of a few hundred metres. A room described as having a pyramid view from a hotel on the Nile, fifteen kilometres east, has a hazy triangle on a clear day, when there is one.

What actually produces the view

Distance and air. Cairo has significant particulate haze for much of the year, and it is worse in the autumn burning season. From the Nile hotels the pyramids are visible on good days and invisible on many others. From the Giza hotels they are simply there.

The trade is that Giza is a suburb rather than a city centre. The Egyptian Museum, the Nile, Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and the restaurants are all on the eastern side, and Cairo traffic can make that journey forty minutes or ninety.

So the honest answer is a split trip: nights on the plateau for the pyramids and the new museum, nights on the Nile for the city. Both are on this list.

Giza, on the plateau

Where the pyramids are actually in the window.

Marriott Mena House, Cairo occupies a nineteenth-century royal hunting lodge at the foot of the plateau, with gardens, a pool and rooms that face the Great Pyramid across a few hundred metres of desert. It has been receiving guests since 1886 and it is the only hotel in Egypt with this view. Book a pyramid-view room specifically; the garden-view rooms are pleasant and beside the point.

Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo sits nearby with a large pool complex, a golf course and pyramid views from the upper floors of the correct wing. It is the practical family choice on this side.

The Nile, in the city

Fifteen kilometres east, with the museums, the river and the restaurants.

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza occupies a tower on the Nile Corniche in Garden City with the deepest service in Egypt, a spa, several restaurants and river-facing rooms with balconies. It is the best hotel in the country.

Four Seasons Cairo At The First Residence sits at the northern end of the island of Zamalek with gardens, a pool and a quieter position than the Corniche properties. It is the sister property and the calmer of the two.

The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Cairo occupies a position on the Corniche facing Tahrir Square and the old Egyptian Museum, restored, with a rooftop pool and the most central location in Cairo.

Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah sits on the southern tip of Gezira island with a garden, a pool and rooms on both sides of the river. It is the most peaceful of the Nile hotels.

Kempinski Nile Hotel, Cairo occupies a tower on the Corniche with large rooms, several restaurants and reliable service at below the rates above.

Cairo Marriott Hotel sits in Zamalek in a converted palace built for the opening of the Suez Canal, with enormous grounds, a pool and a genuine sense of the nineteenth century. It is the most atmospheric stay in the city.

The St. Regis Cairo occupies a contemporary tower on the Corniche with a rooftop bar, a spa and the most modern rooms in Cairo.

What we have left off

The hotels around the airport and along the ring road in New Cairo are excluded. They are newer, quieter and better value, and they are forty-five minutes to an hour from both the plateau and the Nile, which in this traffic is most of a morning.

What to do

Go to the plateau at opening. It is hot, exposed and busy by mid-morning, and the light early is much better. Buy tickets in advance where possible and expect to decline camel rides repeatedly and firmly.

The Grand Egyptian Museum sits beside the plateau and holds the Tutankhamun collection. Check current opening arrangements and book ahead; it is a full day rather than a morning.

Do Islamic Cairo properly: the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, the Al-Azhar mosque, the Citadel and Ibn Tulun, which is the oldest and emptiest of the great mosques. The Coptic quarter and the Hanging Church are a separate half day.

Take a felucca on the Nile at sunset. It costs very little and it is the most pleasant hour in the city.

Consider adding Luxor, an hour by air, which has more standing antiquity than anywhere on earth.

Practical notes

Cairo airport is in the northeast. Allow 45 to 90 minutes to central hotels and considerably more to Giza in traffic.

October to April is the season: warm days, cool nights and manageable sun. May to September is extremely hot on an unshaded plateau.

Use a driver or a reputable app rather than street taxis. Dress modestly, particularly at religious sites, and expect persistent commercial attention at the major monuments.
